T1 (Holy Wei's) Samples: First Impressions - by Jae
*Up front caveat - I literally only got these in a short while ago, and have only tried them unlubed and in a switch tester next to a Zealio V2 and a Holy Panda. I've tried to be objective except where I give a clear opinion.
The samples I have are both from the Smokey Housing and Clear Housing variants. The Smokey ones are pleasantly coloured, and look really nice. The clear ones are almost identical to clear Gateron switches, but have different mould and sprue markings. On the tops of the smokey switches the KBDFans logo is present, but there is no logo on the clear examples. All the stems I have are the same in terms of profile and shape, but there are different colours. I believe the beige stems are from prototyping, and the teal one is the actual production version.
These feel really similar to a Zealio v2 - no pre-travel followed by a really large tactile bump. The T1's are slightly smaller in terms of bump size but its a barely perceptible difference. The housings are very smooth stock and unlubed (although I do think they may be improved with a touch of lube). This is comparable to stock Zealios, and nicer than the dark housings of Gateron and Cherry switches. The bottom out is very different to the Holy Panda. As Halo stems are longer and the bottom out is quite swift and harsh - these switches feel softer, closer to a standard switch/stem feel. The smokey housing is slightly smoother than the clear, but this is again almost imperceptible.
In a switch tester both the smokey and clear housings sound broadly the same. There is some slight spring ping, but this is less than stock Zealios, or Pandas. The spring is noticeably better in the clear housing, but I haven't ascertained if this is the housing or the spring as of yet. The sound in the switch tester makes the Zealios, other clear Gaterons and these switches almost identical. Its a very different sound to the Holy Panda however, given their unique sound signature.
These are very tactile and pretty smooth. I think lube will definitely improve them, and i really like them in just the switch tester. I'm definitely interested in trying a full board, and looking forward to my GB pack coming. I would say they are 90-95% of a Zeal v2 and not a true HP clone. This is for two reasons, the bottom out is not Holy Panda type with the elongated stem, and secondly the sound is different due to the different materials used in the switch manufacturing process.
Right now these are not quite the same as Zealio V2's, and I do personally prefer the V2 as a switch overall. But these are very close, and I'm interested to see how the GB ones are when they ship.
